Why would you want to force your computer to display a Blue Screen of Death?
If Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn’t work (known to geeks the world over as the three-finger salute), then a forced BSOD is your last resort. It’s kind of like pulling the plug, but slightly less harsh and much more likely to impress your nerd friends.
This little registry hack works in Windows XP and Windows 2000.
From Microsoft:
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters
3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value Name: CrashOnCtrlScroll
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1
4. Quit Registry Editor.
Note: You must restart your computer for these changes to take effect. |
Now, just hold down Ctrl and press the Scroll Lock key twice. FUN!
Microsoft has all the details on this feature. Check the title of the article. According to Microsoft, a Blue Screen of Death is a FEATURE. A feature? Go figure.
For the BSOD obsessed, there’s a gallery of Blue Screen of Death pictures on Flickr.
I personally don’t need this little hack. I use a Mac and it never crashes… *cough* *cough*
