Slashdot!

2/26/2005

Yikes! It took me 2 days to come back after a Slashdotting. My post on stripping the DRM from a silent iTunes song really got some people going.

I owe a HUGE thanks to my new web host ReadySetConnect for donating their server space to host my site.

Again, I’d like to thank all of my site’s visitors (both old and new) for their kind words, comments, links, and support.

Why would you want to force your computer to display a Blue Screen of Death?

If Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn’t work (known to geeks the world over as the three-finger salute), then a forced BSOD is your last resort. It’s kind of like pulling the plug, but slightly less harsh and much more likely to impress your nerd friends.

This little registry hack works in Windows XP and Windows 2000.

From Microsoft:
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

2. Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters

3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value Name: CrashOnCtrlScroll
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1

4. Quit Registry Editor.

Note: You must restart your computer for these changes to take effect.

Now, just hold down Ctrl and press the Scroll Lock key twice. FUN!

Microsoft has all the details on this feature. Check the title of the article. According to Microsoft, a Blue Screen of Death is a FEATURE. A feature? Go figure.

For the BSOD obsessed, there’s a gallery of Blue Screen of Death pictures on Flickr.

I personally don’t need this little hack. I use a Mac and it never crashes… *cough* *cough*

Hacking the iTunes Music Store… Part Deux

February 22, 2005

Yes. I’m exploiting the iTunes Music Store again.
The other day, my friend Wes said that instead of wasting my free Pepsi song, I could have just listened to 18 seconds worth of silence from the band Sigur Ros for free. When you preview a track on the iTunes music store, you can listen to a [...]

Wow!

February 18, 2005

I’m back up! Holy Moses, that was annoying.
The ONE DAY (yesterday) that I get some big, big traffic (mainly from the good folks at Boing Boing and the faithful diggers over at digg.com), this site goes absolutely haywire.
The only saving grace was that while I was down, it looked like either the RIAA or [...]

Breaking The Law

February 17, 2005

I’m gonna preface this by saying that I love Apple and their products and I hate the RIAA and their shortsightedness. My only complaint with Apple is the restrictive DRM built into iTunes Music Store songs (also, those new G5s could be a little cheaper).
In protest, I’ve committed a real crime and documented the entire [...]

Skip the Monkeys

February 13, 2005

I’ve already invented a word (WarTuning) and it has caught on pretty well. Why, just yesterday hackaday.com posted a link to my tiny article as one of their Saturday Links! UPDATE: Waxy.org’ed too! WarTuning has a life of its own now. Can a Slashdotting and a BoingBoinging be far behind?
So, now I have a big [...]

Kaiju Big Battel

February 12, 2005

Guys in Japanese monster costumes wrestle.
The videos have convinced me that I must catch this show next time they’re in town.
Apparently, this has been around for a while. Am I the only person who’s never seen this before? Even CNN, MTV & Jimmy Kimmel picked up on the phenomenon.
