WarTuning

1/5/2005

This idea just came to me in a flash. If you’ve seen this elsewhere, let me know because I haven’t yet.

WarTuning: Wardrive using your WiFi enabled laptop to listen to (download?) other people’s shared music through iTunes.

If you’re feeling especially delinquent, you can download songs from iTunes libraries that you find using ourTunes (this is definitely illegal, so don’t do it).

WarTuning here in LA might be fun. I wonder what the stars in Hollywood are listening to.

Hopefully, we’ll be demonstrating this on The Screen Savers on the 19th of January.

At the National Youth Leader Ship Forum on Technology last year, in downtown San Jose at the Fairmont Hotel, a couple of friends and I had a blast doing just that. There were hundreds of people on the lobby wifi at any given time, and many sharing music through iTunes. I found a differen’t app than ourTunes, but same difference. I ended up with over 60 gigs of music in the span of a few days. But “wartuning” might be a bit difficult, as so many people don’t use iTunes, let alone have non-password protected sharing on. It would definitally by lucky to find one, but fun when you do. Good luck with the segment.

Scott…I am organizing a Google AdSense “click-fest” charity to aid the Tsunami devistations. The event is going to take place on my blog, and I want to know if you would get the word out by posting a notice of it on your site.

The Google Adsense account is set up so that the payment goes right to Doctors of the World-USA in Southeast Asia. Hopefully with popular sites like yours spreading the word we can raise $10,000 by just clicking google ads. Visit my site for more information ostermayer.blogspot.com

THanks for your help

That seems like a nice program, but dont you think they would stop you from demoing it on The Screen Savers. With the new format and all that seems a tad bit geeky for what the show is now.

We might mention ourTunes during the segment, but we’re more interested in finding out how much music we can uncover by wardriving with iTunes open. You can download and start using ourTunes right now (make sure you check out the readme file).

I do something like that in my college dorm. The dorm internet system is set up in sub-networks and quite a few kids have routers in their rooms. And very few of the people with routers know how to keep other from hacking into the connection. So I sometimes war drive around the dorm just to look at other peoples iTunes. It’s a lot of fun, and I have not heard of anyone putting together a comprehensive guide on how to do it.

myTunes can do the same thing and has a better interface.

“WarTuning: Wardrive using your WiFi enabled laptop to listen to (download?) other people’s shared music through iTunes.”

How about “stream”? Isn’t that the terminology for listening to songs on another iTunes (without doing the whole ourTunes downloading thing)?

I’d think your best bet would be driving up and testing coffee shops where people are flocking with laptops. Sometimes it’s a bust, so wartuning the shop before you stopped and went inside would be key, if there was no one sharing, you could just go 3 stores down to the next starbucks.

The car-to-car incarnation will be invented by an Eastern Standard Tribalist living in London sometime in the near future…

For all of those folks on the Mac, try iStumbler. It features a multicast DNS plug-in.

I think “streaming” implies that the source is aware that his/her music is being dl’ed. Wartuning means that it’s sort of a crack/hack situation.

I have just started with myTunes. I can listen to shared itunes music, but can’t download it through myTunes. It worked last night at a coffee shop for about twenty songs, and then suddenly quit. I played with the firewalls, and ports, but it still didn’t work last night. I then took it to work and tried to copy files from another shared drive. Again, I can listen to the music, but can not get it from myTunes. There is a red “X” indicating that the shared drive is not accessable. ourTunes doesn’t work either. . . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

loc 8/29/2005 at 4:45 pm

Starting to used it on the network, nice. Do have the problem with it that the thing freezes after downloading something like 10 songs…

Setherson 1/30/2006 at 12:48 am

I have had similar problems with the red X from other people on the network. I’ve successfully shared music by enabling random Windows Services and restarting iTunes, however i am not sure which ones actually allow me to share. Hopefully someone else might understand how iTunes and myTunes work and could figure out how the newer versions of iTunes don’t quite allow myTunes to work as it once did.
