Gimpshop 2.2.10 for OS X – Now Available

2/3/2006

Gimpshop is a Gimp modification that features menu layouts and naming conventions similar to those in Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop users should feel right at home using Gimpshop.

With this release, Gimpshop runs for the first time in OS X 10.4 Tiger as a self-contained app! I’ve also added two additional plug-ins for the OS X distribution: Greycstoration and Resynthesizer. This latest version of Gimpshop also supports Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG).

Greystoration is a powerful plug-in that removes noise, grain and compression artifacts from your images. You can find Greycstoration in Filter > Misc.

Resynthesizer creates tileable images (great for desktop backgrounds) from textures. You can find Resynthesize in Filter > Map.

Download Gimpshop 2.2.10 for Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 Here (66 MB)
In OS X, you will also need X11 or XDarwin in order to launch and run Gimpshop. I recommend you download and install Apple’s X11.

For developers: Get the source files here (16 MB) based on Gimp 2.2.10

If you would like to create a Gimpshop installer for PC users (Windows, Linux, etc.) please let me know in the comments. I’ll be forever grateful AND I’ll link to you. I can probably host the file for you, too!

Don’t know what Gimpshop is? Find out more.

A big, big thanks to Aaron Voisine (creator of the original Gimp.app for Mac OS X) for his infinite patience and knowledge. Without him, this update would not have seen the light of day. Thanks, Aaron!

I’m so lost. I’m trying to run Gimp on tiger 10.4. I uninstalled the version I had on my computer (I had downloaded it from Apple), and installed Packages>X11SDK.pkg from my Tiger install disk. Gimp is still not opening. When I click on the icon, it jumps but nothing happens. Where am I going wrong? Before I uninstalled X11, I tried looking on the system for an X11.pkg, but there wasn’t one. There still isn’t one. Help!

I’m so lost. I too am having an inordinately difficult time installing Gimp. When I click on the icon to open Gimp, the icon jumps in the dock, but nothing happens. Not even an error message. Like the previous posts said to do, I un-installed X11, and tried to re-install from my Tiger setup disk (I’m running 10.4 on an Intel MacBook Pro). I installed Disk 1>Packages>X11SDK.pkg. When I tried opening Gimp, same thing happened. Nada. What am I missing? Where did I go wrong? Please help!

Installed X11 successfully from disc, installed Gimpshop successfully from here, now opening the Gimpshop app simply brings up X11, and then Gimpshop silently quits.

I am running 10.4.8 on a 2.33 Intel Core duo Macbook pro.

Hi am also having trouble with X11SDK.pkg. Gimpshop worked fine on last Macbook till it had an accident and was replaced. Gimpshop will jump on dock but says it requires X11user, install disc only contains X11SDK.pkg???

X-11 problems?
After you installed an open source program using X-11 you sometimes need to reinstall X-11.
The X-11 installer just install whats needed for the moment and different program uses different parts of the X-11 install.

ok, so its seems as though everyone has the X11 problem, but is there a remedy to this problem? Im having the same scenario but I’d like to get this working, I was really looking forward to using this but Im not having much luck, so remedies please… thanks.

Since my problem has already been described, I would not be posting, EXCEPT that I may have some information that will help the developers find out what is going on with everyone else. For that reason, here’s my situation:

- I have an oooold iMac (CRT) running Panther (10.3) quite happily. Since I bought it used, I installed X11 from the Apple Web site yesterday — X11 1.0 – XFree86 4.3.0, according to the “about” box. Remember, I’m running Panther, NOT Tiger, so I assume that I installed the correct version for my particular OS version.

- When I try to run the package directly (“Method one” in future reference), the X11 application launches and STAYS LAUNCHED (unlike several other errors described here). The Gimpshop application icon also bounces, but then diseappears almost immediately.

- Trying another method suggested here (“method two” in future reference), I ctrl-clicked, revealed the package contents, and then launched the program from the “Mac OS” subfolder. The following terminal text appeared:

Last login: Sun Jun 24 16:03:25 on ttyp1
-bash-2.05b$ /Applications/GIMPshop.app/Contents/MacOS/Gimp; exit
/Applications/GIMPshop.app/Contents/Resources/init: line 1: dirname: command not found

/Applications/GIMPshop.app/Contents/Resources/init: line 16: exec: /Users/jonmsith/bin/cache-fonts: cannot execute: No such file or directory
/Applications/GIMPshop.app/Contents/Resources/script: line 1: dirname: command not found

/Applications/GIMPshop.app/Contents/Resources/script: line 27: exec: /bin/gimp: cannot execute: No such file or directory
logout
[Process completed]

… with the X11 program again staying open while the Gimpshop program closed.

I’ve also tried both methods with Gimp itself (not Gimpshop). Same result using method one, with the following text when using method two:

Last login: Sun Jun 24 16:04:09 on ttyp1
/Applications/Gimp.app/Contents/MacOS/Gimp; exit
-bash-2.05b$ /Applications/Gimp.app/Contents/MacOS/Gimp; exit

/Applications/Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/init: line 7: dev/null: No such file or directory
/Applications/Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/init: line 16: /Users/jonmsith/bin/cache-fonts: No such file or directory
/Applications/Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/init: line 16: exec: /Users/jonmsith/bin/cache-fonts: cannot execute: No such file or directory
/Applications/Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/script: line 1: dirname: command not found
cp: /bin/getdisplay.sh: No such file or directory

/Applications/Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/script: line 27: exec: /bin/gimp: cannot execute: No such file or directory
logout
[Process completed]

I know pretty much nothing about compiling binaries, nor do I really know anything about Linux, save how to change directories. I’m not in any huge rush to use Gimp (have access to photoshop anyway), but I’m posting this information in hopes that it will help you figure out some common issues that might be causing problems for people. Thanks for providing this software to the community in the first place. Good luck!

I was wondering if there is anyway other than the disks to install x11 on my laptop am running 10.4.9? Would love to try gimpshop out but when my computer died the mac shop upgraded my operating system. Didn’t give me any disks though.eek.

patrickom 7/7/2007 at 6:17 pm

It’s been a couple weeks since I’ve been able to spend any quality time with my mac. I see everyone else is busy too, as no one has replied to the post — which is fine.

For information’s sake, here’s an update: I’ve tried running /Applications/GIMPshop.app/Contents/MacOS/Gimp from the terminal using each of the five shells that come with Mac OS 10.3.9 in the hope that maybe a shell script was just not cooperating with the shell I happened to be using.

Sadly enough, this still resulted in the same error messages I’d been receiving.

Just thought I should throw that tidbit of information out there, lest anyone be about to suggest that I switch shells.

I’ll keep slowly trying stuff, and let folks know when I come up with something (IF I come up with a solution before somebody else posts it).

I too had the weird open and close syndrome haunting me. Finally got mine to work on 10.4.10! Here’s all I had to do:

1. Update X11 to 1.1.3 – XFree86 4.4.0
2. Update XCode tools to 2.4.1

After that, all was well and it works FANTASTIC!

I installed gimp, and i have x11 but it is still saying that i need it and wont open when i try to.

Too complicated 8/27/2007 at 2:28 am

I came over to mac because i wanted to get away from the nightmare of PC code/files etc

So far my Mac has worked great but I’m sad to discover that the Mac Shareware and Open source community is leagues behind the PC open source crowd and install Mac Open source just seems to be headache inducing. Is there a simple step by step install process that doesn’t involve typing code in some file or other or did I just waste a lot of time trying to install GIMP because it’s actually tougher to find the files in the Mac than in Windows?

Dina 9/3/2007 at 10:33 am

Okay, I’m having the newer version of X11 problem, and when I tried to go to installation/packages there wasn’t such a thing, help?

And mine came preinstalled on my computer

Cilnette 12/15/2009 at 12:09 am

Hey … trying to install X11, but a message comes up that says I can’t because my macbook 10.4.8 has newer software installed. Not much of an expert on these matters – would appreciate the help – would love to use gimpshop

Glitchy Goblin 1/21/2010 at 12:28 pm

I want a version of this for Windows 7 so BAD! The old Gimpshop is just breaking down…

I really loved it, too. Help me out, will ya?
