Gimpshop: The Plan

4/25/2006

Here’s all the stuff I’m planning for the next release of Gimpshop. A to-do list that I’ll try to stick to:

  • A Universal Binary for OS X so that Gimpshop runs natively on PowerPC and Intel architecture. This should be available within a week or two.
  • Translatable source code so that Gimpshop can be translated into any language by anyone who has the patience, time and language skills to do it. This is a high priority and I’ll do my best to make it happen.
  • More plug-ins and filters to match Photoshop’s pre-installed filters and Photoshop’s filter structure/naming conventions as closely as possible. In the coming weeks, I’ll be testing the best alternatives so that only the best and most relevant filters are in there. There will be a separate menu area for gimp-specific filters.
  • A simultaneous Windows XP Gimpshop release, providing that I can figure out how to build it on my own. I’ll be building the installer using a new Intel-based Mac purchased with your generous donations. I shudder to think that I’ll be running XP on it, but it’s not my Mac – It’s YOUR Mac and it’s almost here!

I’ll keep you posted. Suggestions are welcome!

This is awesome, such amazing work!! I sat next to you at full sail for our 1st class. Glad to see your doing well! I still remember the bandaid video, you should post that somewhere!

brian 4/25/2006 at 12:36 pm

can’t wait for the universal binary!

Carl Sanderson 4/25/2006 at 1:45 pm

Ask and you shall receive! Awesome Scott. My MAC arrives about then also so that, in my mind, that is just perfect timing.

Goffredo Marocchi 4/26/2006 at 12:23 am

Scott, I just wanted to make a note. Please add the warning to all of those using the source code to compile Gimpshop 2.2.10 on GNU Linux systems using GCC 4.1 (Fedora Core 5, etc…) to install the gcc 3.2.3 (gcc32 and g 32) compatibility packages.

Gimpshop 2.2.10 source does not compile with gcc (GCC) 4.1.0 20060304 (Red Hat 4.1.0-3)
(the default in Fedora Core 5), but does with gcc32 (gcc 3.2.3).

To complement this link: http://linux.suramya.com/tutorials/Install_GIMPShop/

Just substitute

./configure –prefix=/usr

with

./configure –prefix=/usr CC=gcc32 CXX=g 32

“Usage: ./configure [OPTION]… [VAR=VALUE]…

To assign environment variables (e.g., CC, CFLAGS…), specify them as
VAR=VALUE. See below for descriptions of some of the useful variables.

Defaults for the options are specified in brackets.

[...]

CC C compiler command

CXX C compiler command

will this fix the X11 problems i’m having with the current release of Gimpshop?

cls 4/26/2006 at 11:21 am

Awesome, Scott! Can’t wait for the UB version so I can run it on my iMac. :)

Keep up the good work.

Goffredo Marocchi 4/26/2006 at 10:59 pm

Scott, was the “X11″ comment directed to me ?

In that case, can you please describe that problem to me ? (so that I can see if it happens) What OS are you running it on when the problem happens ? (I doubt it is FC4 or FC5 :P )

What I meant by the above post is that with GCC 4.1 (provided by default by Fedora Core 5) gimpshop 2.2.10 does not compile from source. It will only compile with GCC-compatibility-version (gcc32 or gcc 3.2.3, g 32 the ” ” in “g 32″ does not seem to show up in this blog).

Uhm… are you compiling a version of gimpshop based on gimp > 2.2.10 maybe ?

If you want I can post here the compiler log for gimpshop 2.2.10 when you try to use GCC 4.1, if it can be useful :) .

Scott Moschella 4/27/2006 at 9:04 am

Stevie! I’m going to send you an email. So great that you found me. :)

Goffredo, were you ever able to figure out a workaround to get the gimp MMX optimizations to compile? I’m compiling Gimpshop under OS X on Intel and it’s stalling at gimp-composite-mmx. I’m going to disable MMX for now, but am hoping we can find a fix so that Gimpshop doesn’t take a speed hit.

Thanks!!

I’m also going to try to answer Scott’s question:

To fix your X11 problem, you’ll need to install the X11 User Package from your Tiger Install DVD. That package is inside the SYSTEM folder on the DVD. Use spotlight or search to find it… search for ‘X11′ inside the SYSTEM folder on your Tiger install DVD.

The X11 installer from Apple’s website is outdated and will cause problems when running Gimp and Gimpshop under X11 in OS X.

I hope that solves your problem.

Goffredo Marocchi 4/27/2006 at 10:23 pm

Scott,

the workaround to the original MMX problem with gimpshop 2.2.8 was solved moving to the 2.2.10 based source (gimpshop itself moved from being based of GIMP 2.2.8 to GIMP 2.2.10).

Compiling gimpshop 2.2.10 with GCC 4.1 I got another, a new MMX problem so to speak because I do think it did stop the compilation at gimp-composite-mmx.

gcc –version what does it tell you on OS X ?

The reason I am asking is that besides OS X vs Fedora Core 5, we share platform so to speak: the laptop I am running Fedora Core 5 and have encountered this GCC 4.1 compile issue with gimpshop 2.2.10 is based on the Intel Core Duo processor (T2300 in this laptop) which does ship in the new Mac OS X powered computers.

I suspect that if you are using GCC it might already be GCC 4.0/GCC 4.1 and this seems to bring some problems.

Scott Moschella 4/28/2006 at 5:12 pm

I’m using GCC 4.0. Fink complains when I switch it to GCC 3.3 – which in the past was the stopgap measure to fix this issue. I haven’t tried compiling Gimp 2.2.11 yet, so that’s at the top of the list now. I’ll probably work on that this evening in hopes that I can finish the Universal Binary this weekend.

scott 5/1/2006 at 5:31 pm

Thanks so much! That’s all I needed. I was really getting frustrated with trying to get the X11 to work from the apple website.

Now I can start using this on my iBook instead of my PC. thanks!

Carl 5/7/2006 at 8:00 am

Thank you so much for your work!

Thanks to gimpShop there is no need to take a photo-editing application from “grey” channels. It’s amazing how good it already looks and I’m excited about the upcoming universal binary.

Heather 5/9/2006 at 10:16 am

I happily downloaded the new Mac OS X version of GIMPshop after having it on my desktop. I’m having trouble finding out how to get new brushes? My G3 is a bit rusty, but I had no problem on the desktop and was wondering if maybe I skipped some random part of the install?

And serious kudos for making such an awesome program. I love it.

Will 6/9/2006 at 10:35 pm

Scott, I’m only pointing this out because if anyone can do it, I think you can. You’ve created what is probably the most popular hacked version of the gimp for OS X out there. Some people have now started a gtk – Cocoa port that is complete enough to port the gimp’s gui. I think if you found a way to build and distribute this, even if only a side project of gimpshop at first, It would bring gimp to a LOT more users.

Scott Moschella 6/10/2006 at 3:15 pm

Hey Will, thanks for the advice. I’ve been keeping a close eye on the GTK project and, as soon as it’s doable, I’ll definitely try to free Gimpshop of its X11 shackles.

I don’t know if anyone will read this comment so far down the front page, but I have a feature request:
Can you make the left side toolbar layout the same as photoshop?

MacDummy 6/21/2006 at 12:39 am

I can’t find the brushes folder in OS X 10.4. I see only the gimpshop application, but no gimpshop folder at all. I need to add some brushes. Can anybody give me a tip where or how to find the brushes folder, please?

Fly_chick 7/24/2006 at 7:37 pm

How do i get new brushes :S?

Chad Smith 8/28/2006 at 7:16 pm

Hey, just wondering when you are going to follow through on this:

A simultaneous Windows XP Gimpshop release, providing that I can figure out how to build it on my own. I’ll be building the installer using a new Intel-based Mac purchased with your generous donations. I shudder to think that I’ll be running XP on it, but it’s not my Mac – It’s YOUR Mac and it’s almost here!

It’s been over 4 months since you promised that.

John R 9/19/2006 at 1:40 pm

I wondered if you have any idea how to get in touch with Dakira (Matthias) who did the Windows port of GIMPshop. It looks like it installs correctly on my machine, and the background screen is there, but the menus are all still the arcane GIMP format. Of course if you are going to release your own Windows installer soon then maybe it is a moot point. BTW, looking through your posts, you were talking about something that would make some money off the website ads. I would have to believe the GIMPshop per your plan (ie – installs for all major O/S) could make considerable income off the ads for a home page for that. Its interesting to note that some of the most succesful free software out there (such as OOo or Ubuntu) keep the free software philosophy but have an underlying strong commercial connection.

Any info. would be appreciated.

smorrie 10/25/2006 at 8:49 pm

Scott,

Sorry for the off topic post but I could not find an appropriate spot.
I manage the image of the computing labs of a university in Australia.
On of the lecturers that use the labs has requested GimpShop be
Placed on the image.
I need to know if the free licensing is OK if I place Gimpshop on 140 Workstations in a learning environment

Please email me for further info etc

thanks

Is anyone working on a user manual for Gimpshop? (a modified version of The Gimp User Manual perhaps?) I would be happy help, or start an OSX if no-one else has. I am a (mature aged) Visual Arts student doing some units in image manipulation, and am about to have a couple of months off over our Oz summer. My college earlier required students to “have” & use that high priced commercial one but have now eased off on that given that no-one seemed to buy it. I believe it bad policy on the part of Public educational institutions to require the purchase of any particular piece of expensive commercial software in order to learn principles & techniques applicable to various software & hardware platforms. I would view working on a manual as being very useful in climbing my own learning curve, as well as assisting this great project. Best regards to all contributors

Thylacine 11/8/2006 at 10:21 pm

BTW, i am talking about a text document here, not something for the intergrated help system. I have no interest in learning XML, or even to create a Docbook. Someone else can do that. I am interested in the end user………..

I tried to compile gimpshop 2.2.8 with gcc 4.1 (ubuntu 6.10 on mac PPC) and got an error. so I read the post above about using gcc 3.2. gcc 3.2 is not available in my Synaptic package list so I installed gcc 3.4 instead. However I still get an error when doing:

./configure –prefix=/usr CC=gcc-3.4

This is the relevant output from config.log: (same error as when i used gcc 4.1)

configure:2514: gcc-3.4 conftest.c >&5
/usr/bin/ld: crt1.o: No such file: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
configure:2517: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:
| /* confdefs.h. */

Anyone got any ideas how to fix this??

Hi Scott: I’ve just looked for hours for an email address for you to contact you. I hope you still read this old post! I just wanted to let you know that I dl GIMPshop a few days ago, and love it. Much more user friendly than the original GIMP which I had tried as well and gave up on. I write many tutorials for PSP, PhotoImpact, Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and I just started writing for GIMPshop. I only have 2 so far (well I’ve only had it for a couple of days! LOL) but I’m planning on including GIMPshop in my list of programs I write for regularly. I am really looking forward to the next version for Windows.
The point of the post is, I am offering GIMPshop for Window v2.2.8 from my site along with that plugin manager pspi. I wasn’t sure if this was ok? I have your site address right next to it. I only have the Windows exe file and no other documentation. If you would like me to include that would you point me to where I could find this? I have only found tar files which I believe are for Macs. If you want to check my site out, go here:
http://www.ellies-treasures.com/tutorials/tutorials.html
Or contact me at jewel@myrealbox.com.
Thanks for the great program!
Hugs, Ellie

can you please post a link to your bandaids video. i cant find it on the fullsail website anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi. Love the work you’ve done. But I was wondering if you could solve the problem of using a WACOM Graphire tablet with pressure sensitive pen with X11 Gimpshop (Gimp)? Also, Can Gimp be tweaked to take advantage of Apple’s CoreImage?

Thanks.

are there tutorials for using gimpshop?

Richard Tummers 11/19/2007 at 9:09 pm

Any news on the Exception Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bf9c 4 75b6b9c 75b6bf9c?

I have the exact message, only when I start GIMP. After some basic investigation, it does not look to be a virus, or a renegade drive letter, or quicktime.

Where can I find some more info on this? Can you mail it to me. I just ask cause the posta re old and wondering whats the updated status.
