Gimpshop 2.2.11 Universal Application (85 MB) for OS X Tiger (Intel & PowerPC) and Panther.
Want to complie Gimpshop for other operating systems? Get the Gimpshop 2.2.11 source (13 MB) and start hacking.
Thanks to your generous donations – with a very special thanks to Wil Shipley and the Delicious Monster guys! – a Universal Gimpshop App for Intel-based Macs is here.
Some caveats:
1. Because of the bandwidth drain that I expect this may cause, please don’t link directly to the binary. If you post a link, please either link to this blog post, the Gimpshop page OR mirror the file on your own server. Thanks!
2. I’ve only tested it on my new Intel-based Mac (on which it was built). I would love to hear any successes or failures in the comments with Intel-based OS X machines.
3. For IntelMac Gimpshop users: Because of a byte-swapping issue with Intel-based Macs and X11, your Gimpshop.app cursors may appear a very light yellow color (instead of black) until you run this fix. Yellow cursors are no fun. This is an Intel-based Mac X11 issue, not a Gimp issue.
4. If you’re running OS X 10.4 Tiger and don’t currently have X11 installed, make sure you install X11 from your Tiger OS X Install DVD. The installer package (X11User.pkg) is located in the disc’s System folder. The version of X11 available for download from Apple’s website is not compatible (as far as I can tell) with Tiger.

Hey, just looking for a version of this for regular computers… Mac is not something I have.
Cool site! Your website is a powerful tool for the visitors!
Hello,
The Gimshop for is closed to be the best app I have recently discovered. I wonder if there is a way to have a more Mac Os X look and feel than now.
So here are my two requests :
- The First I know will not be easy and will need a lot of work in Gimp : Please No More X11.
- The second one maybe easier : I’d like to have the true Mac shortcuts key (with apple key), I mean how can I change all the keyboard shortcuts starting with the Control key by the same starting with the apple key ?
this is ridiculous, you just lost a customer… install the program, it needs X11, I try to install X11, I already have it (fucked program already). I remove the files I have, so I reinstall. Tried again, it still needs the X11 (but I JUST installed it), doesnt work. Tried to download the update for X11 1.1.3 (or whatever) and my system says I dont need it… this is totally fucked, thanks for wasting my time.
Hi, I’ve installed GIMPShop 2.2.8 – but the HELP function is not working, can’t find the help file. Also when I open the preferences window, whether I save it or not, an error occurs & GIMPShop closes. Says it’s writing an error file, but I can’t find it anywhere.
I fired off the new universal package. It took me through the installation setup and then put up the Tip of the Day. And that was it. No toolbars. Nada. When I closed the Tip box all I had was my desktop. I even left Gimpshop running for 15 minutes, just to see if something was going on behind the scenes. No luck. I clicked on the X11 dock icon and got the X11 menu bar, but that’s all. I have X11 installed (from the install DVD) and can run other X11 apps, such as OpenOffice and ImageMagick without problems.
Any suggestions?

I have a new Intel Duo Core MacBook. Whenever I launch the app, X11 opens up, but Gimpshop does nothing; not even a tip of the day. A friend of mine did some digging in xterm and kept getting an error message talking about wrong architecture. I’m a newb when it comes to Mac and so this is probably an easy problem, but any help would be… um… helpful. Thanks.
Matt
Dear Scott
I know Gimp for a long time and I also used GimpShop on Windows-based PCs befor I converted to Mac. I would really like to run GimpShop on my Mac but there is a small problem:
GimpShop won’t run on a normal user account
At least without further customizing the installation. Well, since one (1) should not work regularly on an Administrator account and (2) I don’t want to log out and log in every time I want to use GimpShop I wonder if there’e a way of bypassing this issue.
I guess I am not the only one who is dealing with this issue and there have already been published some comments on it. So, would you or anyone else on the blog be so kind as to hint me to the apropriate procedure. I’d really like to work with GimpShop but I do not have the time to figure out this problem.
Many Thanks in advance
Cheers
Gerd
“this is ridiculous, you just lost a customer…” Wait, what? You get stuff for free, can’t get it to work, and instead of asking for help, you complain, and do everything short of asking for your “money back”. Scheez.
Thanks a million for Gimpshop Scott, hope to see an updated windows version soon.
hi
We can host a page with screenshots dedicated to GimpShop at freewarehome.com (and download for Windows as well). Let me know if interested.
Eugene,
I’m trying, and not sure that i’m looking in the rihgt places, to find the Help files for GIMPshop 2.2.8 (Windows). I don’t even know if they exist yet. I don’t have much money, and don’t know a thing about writing code. But, I am a photographer who loves the initial results from GIMPshop. Keep up the good work. JR
Hi
Thanx for a great hack.
Couple of problems… some of the wording in preferences are just little squares, (missing font? which one?) and the other is a little strange cos it looks just like Gimp I use on my linux box, menus a little different, but thats all, the top title bar remains on X11? Is this how it should work/ look?
Using iBook G4 PPC and tiger 10.4.11

Good website – thank you
I have the same problem as another poster in that every time I try to make a NEW document, Gimpshop closes. It doesn’t look like he got a solution from anyone, but I’ll give it a try…any ideas? I got gimp to make backgrounds, but it only seems to want to photo-edit. If I can’t create new documents, it is useless to me. Is there a fix somewhere to this issue? I’m desperate!!!!
ok i downloaded the gimpshop (http://www.plasticbugs.com/blogimg/Gimpshop-OSX-2.2.11.dmg) to my mac os x powerpc tiger. but when i try to open the dmg file. it doesnt open and then appears a message that says that the dmg file was not configured something like that. but i cant install it. i do have gimp running on the same computer and i have x11 in order to run gimp. so anybody knows what is the problem??
HowTo install GIMPshop 2.2.11 with GCC4 and libpng >=1.2.11 under Linux on the x86 architecture.
Okay…so gimpshop won’t build with the newer version of libpng but that doesn’t mean you need to completely revert to libpng-1.2.10
Download libpng-1.2.10 ….untar it…..cd into the libpng-1.2.10 and run ‘./configure && make’ after it finishes compiling unhide the ‘.libs’ folder by running ‘mv -v .libs libs’ from within the libpng-1.2.10 directory then ‘cd ..’ to back out of the libpng-1.2.10 directory and copy it to a system wide location if you would like. as root or using ’sudo’ run the command ‘mv -v libpng-1.2.10 /usr/lib/libpng-1.2.10
now to install gimpshop….download and untar gimpshop-2.2.11 and compile and build it with these commands:
‘CFLAGS=”-fomit-frame-pointer” CC=”gcc -L/usr/lib/libpng-1.2.10/libs” ./configure –prefix=/usr –sysconfdir=/etc –disable-print’ (ofcourse you don’t need to –disable-print if you want that feature) then set the same CFLAGS and CC variables for issuing make ‘CFLAGS=”-fomit-frame-pointer” CC=”gcc -L/usr/lib/libpng-1.2.10/libs” make’
then as root user run ‘make install’
and gimp should install using the older libpng-1.2.10 libraries while all other programs should still detect and use the newer libpng if one exists on your system. also you may want to ‘mkdir -v /tmp/.gimp’ if you want to use that for your gimp swap file.
oh yeah and you may want to update http://www.gimpshop.com the sources on there are version 2.2.8 and the “development sources” also have the same problem described above as all being *.bin files
Just wanted to say thanks for all of your hard work at putting together what seems to be a great app!
Kudos – As a programmer I know that feedback is very important. I hope that you continue to have time to work on this product. Many coders out there would be happy to assist.
I have tried simply downloading and running the install on Leopard and it failed (naturally). I understand that most likely some library references are invalid when the OS changes. I will try to hack around the issue and discover the break points under the new mac OS.
Anyway I like that as a challenge but I just wanted to shout out – THANKS FOR YOUR EFFORT!
:0)
??
Hi all,
BTW – I have taken a few minutes to analyze why the install was not working on Leopard. Essentially two old versions of libraries were in the Gimpshop.app directory (accessible via Ctrl+Shift+G) and once I located the new libraries and the shortcuts being referenced in the Gimshop.app all of the problems faded away.
The app loaded and I am working on the last bug which seems to be a missing plug-in image. Careful reading of the Report button when the application crashes will show you why the program is crashing. A quick google search will help one find the new binary locations on the Mac (don’t bother using the finder in this case it is looking for user not system files).
Anyway – as of now I have this running on my Leopard. I am going to restart before finding the image for the plugin and then I will try to come back with more details. All in all for a free program the problems were not difficult to resolve.
Hi all,
The following is for anyone who wants to get the Gimpshop (Gimpshop-OSX-2.2.11) working on the Leopard (at least until the next release). For a quick overview one will need to perform these basic steps:
Open the dmg file and drag the program icon to the applications folder
Go to applications folder and double click (expect an error message)
To fix the errors one needs to remove a series of files from the Gimpshop.app folder.
These removed files need to have newer versions copied from the Mac system folders into the Gimpshop.app folder
At this point I get one message about a plugin not working because the program is looking for a particular file (/sw/lib/libgtkhtml-2.0.dylib). When I find the file I will post back but the app works fine without this plugin (its basically the help file which I won’t miss because I like to figure stuff out). One will have to create the folder structure and place the missing file in it to achieve 100% functionality.
So here is a list of the files that I put into a folder on my desktop which I removed from the Gimpshop.app (you can see them by clicking show package contents on the menu after selecting the file):
libiconv.2.dylib
libiconv.2.3.0.dylib
libfontconfig.dylib
libfontconfig.1.dylib
libfontconfig.1.0.4.dylib
I copied the following files into the Gimpshop.app folder (using copy/paste keystrokes). The important thing is to remember to leave the original system files in their location while removing the Gimpshop.app files.
System files copied into the Gimpshop.app
libfontconfig.1.1.0.dylib }
libfontconfig.1.3.0.dylib } all found in /usr/X11/lib
libfontconfig.1.dylib }
libfontconfig.dylib }
libiconv.2.dylib } found in /usr/lib
libiconv.2.4.0.dylib }
So basically on my new Mac OS Leopard I have Gimpshop 2.2.11 running with a couple of tweaks. Now I saw another version of Gimp floating around but it did not say Gimpshop so I have not tried installing it – for those of you who want to try it here is the filename GIMP-2.6.5-p1-Leopard-universal.dmg.
NOTE – If anyone has a version of the plugin file (/sw/lib/libgtkhtml-2.0.dylib) that is running on a Macintosh please email it to me or point a link in my direction. Its easy to see if you have the file – just open any folder and type command+shift+g and then type /sw/lib into the dialog box and press enter). I am happy that I found a free image editor.
BTW – I am new to the Mac but I used to be a Unix hack (20+ odd years ago). I look forward to finding more Mac gems out there. Just had another thought that the missing file might be in the GiMP version – if found will post back…
Hi all,
Last post on this (promise). I found that GIMP-2.6.5-p1-Leopard-universal.dmg at first blush appears to have everything that 2.2.11 has although I have not done anything except the simplest test with it. It loaded with no errors from the mounted disk image (I did not install it to applications at this point). Paste the filename in google for many mirrors of the file. Hope this helps some of you with issues in the short term. I think I will stick with GimpShop as Scott updates it. Remember all, a programmer can try to examine every possible configuration on every type of machine but the odds are against 100% success every time and coding is not simple. Also if you have problems remember the caveats that were posted and be gentle (and thankful that we have folks who develop FREE software for the rest of us).
Scott – once again – many thanks!
Tommie,
I am pretty new to this all can you give me more detail of where you are deleting and copy your files from and to? I’m confused. msearthtonez AT- YAHOO dot.com
Thanks!
