Gimpshop and CMYK

4/5/2007

Not sure why it took me so long, but I’ve finally added Alastair M. Robinson’s CMYK plugin to Gimpshop for OS X. It converts RGB images to CMYK color space (for printing). I’ll be updating the binary within the next few days. Just wanted to give you all a heads up. Let me know if there’s anything I’m missing. Ideally, this will be rolled into Gimpshop 2.2.14 to be current with the latest stable version of The Gimp. And, of course, you’ll find it in: Image>Mode>CMYK, where it belongs.

UPDATE: Thanks to commenter Alexandre, I’ll be looking into and hopefully adding a better version of the CMYK plugin that Yoshinori Yamakawa has written.

But it’s not ready just yet.

CMYK Support in Gimpshop:

Click for big!

And that same file, exported as a CMYK tiff from Gimpshop and opened inside of Photoshop.

Who says Gimp can’t do CMYK color separations?

Hi,

Sven never wrote this plug-in. It’s Alistair M. Robinson who did it. In fact, there is a newer, much improved version by Yoshinori Yamakawa:

Ahh, thanks for clearing that up and thanks for the info. I’ll see what I can do to implement the better version. I’ll edit my post to credit Alistair.

Sound great.

Hope the Windows version will be upgraded soon also :)

Hey guys great work!
Now that you released an Ubuntu version, are you thinking of releasing one for OpenSuSe 10.2?
Thanks!

Eeva 4/24/2007 at 8:03 am

Hi, didn’t find other place to ask, so here it goes: Is there a simple reason why Gimpshop (windows version) collapses every time I try to make a new document. When editing pictures it works smoothly. I have windows vista.
Thanks a lot, it’s a great program!!!!!!

Trisha 5/7/2007 at 3:32 am

I have the same problem, Eeva, I have Wndows and can’t make a new document. I have to make it in another programm and open it in GIMP.
I’m also anxious to know when the CMYK version for Wndows will be ready. I spent hours designing something only to be told I couldn’t submit it in RGB – I was devastated! I’m not terribly computer literate so wasn’t prepared for this hitch. AArgh.

What is the lasest version of GIMP is it GIMPSHOP 2.2.8 Thanks

Chad Smith 5/25/2007 at 7:32 am

Any word on when this is actually coming out? You said, “I’ll be updating the binary within the next few days.” almost 2 months ago. And we are still waiting for the Windows binaries of the latest version that you promised over a year ago when you got your ad-supported Intel Mac.

Ameior 5/30/2007 at 8:49 am

I just got Gimpshop but I can not import a screenshot I want to work on. Any ideas? It is a known file and I have no Gimp Help loaded at install.

How can I install MAthMap GIMP Plug in in GIMPSHOP? on OSX

http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/schani/mathmap/

or any other plugin for GIMP for that matter.

Mathmap, Polar (most recent if not current) and anything for tone mapping and HDR imagery.

These are very popular plugins

in this arena and are mentioned frequently on FLickr

Hello! Will we see anytime soon a new version of GIMPShop? I have a suggestion: the tool-pallete and the layer pallete to be always-on-top… that is common in photoshop and we miss that in gimpshop too. And if it’s possible, when you hit TAB, these 2 pallete’s to hide (photoshop-like). Thanks for listening.

Not sure if this has been asked and could not find a more suitable plase for it, so here goes.

I work with TV and film and one thing that pops up all the time is the limits of 8bit processing. This has been eliminated by a fork of Gimp. The former FilmGimp, now CinePaint is able to do up to 32bit pr channel and has other functions that Gimp lack.

Why not change the underlying base to CinePaint instead of Gimp? I know it is a lot to ask and probably not something you want to do right now, but well worth thinking about. And since CinePaint is in use in big film companies already, I can not see why it would be negative to bring it a bit closer to PS. Maybe you could even get a more official input in Cinepaint than in Gimp?

I just tried GimpShop, and it is fine for anyone who just use the mouse. But I am very used to a basic set of keyboard shortcuts and modifiers. So for me, GimpShop is not usable. Here is what I need:

ctrl space and use mouse to mark an area to zoom to
space and mouse to move around in pic
ctrl and mouse to move layer
ctrl and to zoom in
ctrl and – to zoom out
ctrl and 0 to fit in window
T to transform

These are the most basic, but I get around pretty well with these. And I could not find them in GimpShop.

Basing GimShop on CinePaint would make it a lot more powerful and actually bypass PS in some areas (PS is on 8 bit for all operations, 16 bit for some and 32bit float for HDR images processing).

I can always dream…

Hi Scott,

Did you ever find a solution to that helpbrowser quit on GIMPShop launch? I still get that error everytime I launch and trawling the comments here didn’t net me a fix.

Ben 7/1/2007 at 10:27 pm

Hi Scott,

Did you ever come up with a solution for that helpbrowser quit on GIMPShop launch? I’m still getting it and I can’t find a fix on the site. Thanks.

Mr. Moschella,

I am writing you in regards to GimpShop. I am a producer at http://www.brokeneggsmedia.com and host of the new pod cast production titled the Open Source and Freeware Zorro which is currently in it’s final stages and will air within the month.

We would love to feature you on the show. A short interview covering GimpShop in VoIP or email format would be wondeful. We look forward to bringing our listeners insight into the freeware and open source world and emphasizing on programs and services that are worth mentioning. I must add GimpShop is at the top of our list and I am sure our listeners would benifit from the thoughts and knowledge that you could provide.

If you have any insider information or additional correspondences you would like to add please feel free to contact me at any time. Thank you for your time and support.

Best regards

Argh… why does vista have to be so crappy with gimp!?!!?! ARGH!!! I miss my XP!!!! stupid crashingness .. :(

Chad 10/14/2007 at 11:45 am

Don’t waste your time, Richard. Scott isn’t a open source programmer anymore than I am a high school freshman. Yeah – I was at one time – but I don’t know what the heck kids today are going through.

Scott did a minor GUI tweak to an open source program about 3 years ago. he rebranded his fork, got some people excited, and then slapped the same tweak on each new version of GIMP than he felt like slapping it on. He hasn’t released ANYTHING in over a year and a half.

But – he got a free computer out of it, which he NEVER used to do fulfill the promises he made to the people who gave him the money. Where I come from – that’s called stealing.

You see, (and the blog posts are still there, so you can read for yourself), he promised that if we, the users, bought him an Intel Mac – he’d use it, not only to release new versions of GIMPShop more quickly for Mac, but also compile his tweaks for Windows. He released one bug fix version for Mac, (which, he didn’t code any bug fixes, he just slapped his tweak on the official GIMP release), and never released anything for Windows. All the ports to Windows – as old as they are – were compiled by other people – not Scott.

So, no, Scott doesn’t deserve to be on your show. He hasn’t done shit for open source in over 18 months – and even then what he did wasn’t impressive…. And this coming from the guy who started the fan site gimpshop.net…

dakira 10/17/2007 at 10:10 am

Hey Scott,

are you thinking of making a GIMPshop based on the latest GIMP (i.e. 2.4)? That would be a really nice thing.. it would also make the CMYK plugin redundant.

Chad 10/19/2007 at 8:22 pm

Dakira,

Scott won’t come out with anything until GIMP.app is updated. All he was doing was adding the tweaked GUI patch to GIMP.app and renaming it.

I know you were one of the ones who came out with the GIMPShop for Windows, (you were the best one, from what I remember). You could probably just apply the same patch you used before whatever you got from Scott or from the source code, and apply it to the latest build of GIMP for Windows. (Along with the Deweirdifier plug-in). Heck, make your own fork and call it Gimpira or something.

I wouldn’t wait for Scott to do anything. He hasn’t in over a year and half.

Also – take a look at the GIMP UI Brainstorm blog. http://gimp-brainstorm.blogspot.com/

I’m working on a submission myself.

Curious…..Curious to find out if there will be another Gimpshop, one with the CMYK
plug in implemented by default…?

Sounds like the guy who set this gig up has lost a bit of steam, seems a bit of a shame, as all that was happening was a bit of recompiling with a bit GUI reorganization to match a Photoshop look and feel.

Perhaps people should stick to the Original Gimp ? if no new releases are forth coming
or perhaps someone else could be the champion of this project….(How about a name that doesn’t have Gimp in the title…)

I would like to see it continue as it offers users another choice, instead of the plain old Gimp 2.2 version.

another additional feature which would really bring this project alive would be new icons
(Gimp Icons Suck….)

Hi -

I love gimpshop but one problem… I just upgraded to OSX Leopard… When will gimpshop support it? Thanks

Victor Tarsus 10/30/2007 at 12:03 pm

I also just upgraded to Leopard and would appreciate info on a possible Gimpshop support upgrade for this new beautiful OS X:)

dave 12/13/2007 at 1:08 am

Too bad these things have never materialized – Gimpshop could have been a great project had you put the time in and built a developer team around it!

Z. Strane 2/12/2008 at 5:10 pm

Great, but isnt it beeing developed anymore? Im waiting for some great new updates guys!!! please.

Jess 3/3/2008 at 3:26 pm

Hi,
i have to ask will gimpshop get selective color? some day?? or does it already??
thanks for ur time

Pomax 3/8/2008 at 3:29 am

it looks like gimpshop’s not realy be touched for close to a year, is it still in development? (and as a windows user, will a new version be available for windows too…?)

Imagegypsy 6/8/2008 at 2:46 pm

Hi, trying to revamp my website without photoshop on my imac. While trying to figure out why preview and gimp show images and image size differently, I was trying to test print a few images only to discover that print isn’t available in gimp. I thought CMYK should only be an issue on higher end printers or for film separations. If others are printing from the Gimp, please tell me how.
