This Bugzilla thread says it all. A woman broke up with her fiance because of the way Firefox handles separate user accounts and passwords. Definitely worth a read. This is almost guaranteed to wind up on Slashdot or Boing Boing sometime today.

Also, Firefox 2.0a1 (that’s Alpha – a.k.a. bleeding edge) is out now. I’m using it and loving some of the extra features. I’m just sad that Greasemonkey and Platypus aren’t here to enjoy it.
I think there’s an Apple conspiracy afoot. I have yet to find one Intel-based Mac inside of a brick-and-mortar Apple Store that has Photoshop loaded onto it.
I’m nearly positive that there are always at least one or two G5s with Photoshop on it. If memory serves, most of the G5s in the Santa Monica Apple Store have Photoshop installed.
I know that Photoshop is not yet optimized for the Intel-based Macs and that it runs under Rosetta. I’ve heard it takes a while (nearly a minute) to load. I really just wanted to see it for myself.
Am I overreacting or is Apple trying to hide Photoshop’s lackluster Rosetta performance?
You should be over at Threadless, stocking your coffers with $10 t-shirts. They’re only on sale for the next 48 hours. Where I’m from, that’s cheaper than buying a blank shirt with nothing on it.
The latest version of Gimpshop now has a brand new splash screen!

In order to build a Universal Binary of Gimpshop for Intel-based Macs, I need an Intel-based Mac to build and test it on. I asked for donations to help pay for a new Mac and in return, promised to add your name to Gimpshop’s splash screen. This new splash screen is evidence of your kindness and generosity.
I can’t thank you enough for the donations. I’ll be buying a new Intel-based Mac in the next few weeks and will take some pictures so you can see me using it.
Thanks again!

You guys are awesome! With your generous donations, I should be able to buy a new Intel-based Mac sometime next month. Gimpshop’s new splash screen will go live tomorrow with the names of all the donors. Expect a universal binary shortly, changes that will make Gimpshop finally translatable into other languages, and some other menu fixes/changes.
A special thanks to Wil Shipley of Delicious Monster (they created Delicious Library) for his very generous donation! Thanks, Wil!
One of my recent articles struck a chord and brought out some of the most insightful comments I’ve seen on any blog. That made me the lucky recipient of some sweet, sweet Mac gems.
These are gems not only for recent switchers but for all Mac users, both new and old. Abbondanza!
Why Safari?
My good friend Patrick says that Safari takes up less system resources than Firefox. I have heard Firefox being criticized for using more RAM and CPU cycles than other OS X browsers. Also, according to Patrick, Flash runs better in Safari. You should trust Patrick on this one, folks. He spends lots of time working with Flash.

Also, many votes for Camino as a faster, better alternative to Safari. It uses the highly regarded Gecko rendering engine (also used in Mozilla Firefox). Plus, it looks nice (uses Cocoa form elements) and just hit 1.0. Congrats, Camino team!
Get Camino, praised for its speed and beauty

In one of my recent posts, I told Mac users that anti-virus software on OS X is worthless. I still stand by this statement, even in light of this new Trojan. I’ve heard of some OS X anti-virus solutions acting like a malicious virus themselves, so the cure may be worse than the disease.
This new trojan horse is not a virus per se. It comes in through an iChat session as what looks like a bundle of pictures. It looks like a JPEG but runs as an app when you double-click it. It’s a shell script and it can cause damage even when run as non-root. A scary thought, but I’m not entirely convinced this is even a threat worth mentioning.
That said, I don’t want to egg-on any would-be virus writers either. In any event, stand down red alert, act like the intelligent OS X user that you are and this stuff shouldn’t even affect you. I hope.

Based on all the comments from my last post (the one below this one), I decided to hunker down and find the ultimate OS X mouse tracking solution. Relying solely on my Google-fu, I found what I was looking for. So, major ups to Big Brother Google!

UPDATE: I’ve been Slashdotted (not for this) and several other geektacular honors (of which I’ll spare you), but I got way more of a kick out of being linked to by Ellenfeiss.net for this article! That guy is WAY more picky about what he blogs. …And it was like, bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep. Go Ellen, go!
Those Intel-based MacBook Pros and iMacs will soon be in your hands. But before you open those boxes and fire them up, there’s a few things I think you should know.
OS X Looks Like OS X
Those days of customizing every last cosmetic detail of your operating system are over. The second you boot your new Mac, you’re probably going to head straight for the System Preferences to see what you can monkey with. The natural reaction to OS X is to start tweaking the GUI. As hard as you try, you will not, I repeat, you will not be able to make OS X look like a Star Trek control panel. I am not daring you to do this. I’m just saying that this is not easy to do.
LCARS Star Trek Theme for WinXP

Lavender… WOOF!
Want to see all the OS X themes you can play with?

Am I exaggerating? Not much.
Want to see those themes again?

I just wanted to thank all the generous folks out there who have already donated to the Gimpshop fund. I promise you that it is money well spent.
I also want to add that I’m going to periodically update the OS X version of Gimpshop with new plug-ins and fixes as they come in. I’m going to add another requested plug-in shortly. And thanks to Eric Dunbar, your Delete (the backspace one) key can soon be used to delete pixels from your selection. Nice work, Eric! I’ll post an updated menurc (the file that enables Photoshop keyboard shortcuts in Gimp) for that soon.
Thanks again!
